Antarctica and Beyond

Part I: Antarctic Peninsula

Getting there
We started our journey from Punta Arenas in southernmost Chile.  One of the very special things about our trip is that we actually get to fly over the Drake Passage, missing out on 2 days of what very often is a rough and boring crossing. Given that we have a long cruise back from South Georgia, this is quite a bonus as it gives us 2 extra days of the expedition. But first the preparation...
All of our shore gear (jackets, pants, gloves etc) must be carefully cleaned before we get on the plane. Antarctica is a pristine and protected environment so any dirt, grass seeds or organisms need to be removed. We are provided with some very glamorous gumboots to wear on the expedition as well, and then proceed to the "weigh in"! What?! Here we discover (I guess it must have been in the fine print) a 20kg luggage allowance on the flight! Hmm fortunately we were not too much over... We are required to wear all of our shore gear on the plane as we will be getting straight onto the boat via zodiac on arrival. Needless to say some of our excess baggage was stowed in pockets...

Well it is about this time that we would have been heading back to Greece, popping over to Leros and dropping our beloved bateau in the water, with a newly anti-fouled hull and a new port engine propeller, amongst other small improvements.

After 6 months of enjoying the Australian summer, despairing at the destruction of bushfires and sharing the joy of those much need rains, who would have thought we would all find ourselves in this bizarre situation. We have had droughts, fires, floods and now pestilence – the Earth is really trying to tell us something!

On the Midnight Watch

For pretty much all of my sailing career (coming up for 30 years now) I have kept to my preference of daytime, inshore sailing, making sure I was always home for dinner or Saturday night’s party. Yes I have done the “odd” yacht delivery (also known as “effed up camping”), a couple of longer passage races and 4 Bol d’Ors (circuit of Lac Leman, Geneva), which all involved sailing overnight. However when it comes to say a Sydney to Hobart, I am more than happy to take Qantas and be the welcoming party on Constitution dock!
