Stuff we shipped to La Rochelle
There are a number of reasons we sent so much of stuff over to La Rochelle, including:
Uchimata were kind enough to store it for us, carrying it all upstairs to their storage area!
Here is what we sent:
18 cartons 2.3 cubic metres, 422kg
Shipping company: Trans International were great to work with and Claudia ([email protected]) was very helpful. All up the cost was around A$2,200, including very minimal customs fee (everything was personal belongings). The items were held in their UK warehouse until closer to our arrival and then sent via road freight.
Tip: A bag of rags from Bunnings would have been a good thing to take/send.
- We were packing up our home to move aboard
- We had plenty of good quality gear (having already combined 2 households) and didn't want to store too much
- The cost was quite reasonable
- We had time to plan, sent stuff in February for our July arrival
- We had limited time in La Rochelle to get ready and depart and didn't want to spend it all shopping!

Here is what we sent:
- All kitchen gear including pots, pans, utensils, crockery (Corelle), cutlery, stick mixer, chef knives, wok, yoghurt maker, canisters etc
- Lifejackets (PFDs), harnesses and strops x 3, jackstays webbing
- Wetsuits, fins and masks x 2
- Our SUPs (Red Paddle inflatable x 2) and high efficiency pump
- All bedding, doonas, sheets, mattress protectors, blankets for 3 cabins (Note: although the mattresses are tapered this is not enough of a problem to warrant ordering tailored sheets; The mattresses are shallow though so bear this in mind for fitted sheets. They are also quite firm so a nice "pillow topper" is a worthwhile investment.)
- Towels, pillows and cushions (used as packing)
- Stick vacuum cleaner (Makita), cryovac machine (latter so far unused...)
- Tools including power tools, plus spares, screws, washers, shackles etc
- Harken winch, winch handles
- Spare lines for sheets/braces/halyards (these were used halyards from race boats donated by friends)
- Wet weather gear x 4
- Assorted clothing (which was long forgotten by the time we arrived!)
- Water maker (Rainman) 55kg
