The coffee table has offers a reasonable amount of storage for items in regular use. We keep some pantry items in here, as well as bottles of spirits. The trouble is, the flip up lids, just like our old school desks, mean you have to remove every item on the table top before you can open it. In addition, its a bit too low if you want to have a casual meal indoors in cooler weather.
The conversion was made using the hinges for a sit/stand office desk. The two halves of the table top were joined together first, using some marine ply on the underside. Then some wooden mounts were attached to the inside ends of the coffee table, and the bottom part of the hinges were attached to these. The top part of the hinges being attached to the underside of the lid of the coffee table. The lid is opened by holding it at either end and lifting it up and back. The hinges hold it in place whilst you find what you are looking for. Then gently pull it towards you and back down again.
It's a little on the low side for seated formal dining, but handy for a casual meal indoors or computer work, and of course resting your coffee cup on.
